Good thing he was trained on how to take on the g force.  There are many techniques he practiced to counter the intense g force.  Also, because of his horizontal position, the blood rushed to the back of his head instead of out the head, lowering the chances of passing out.   In comparison, the maximum number of g's the body of the astronauts felt on the shuttle during launch was 3g.  (A g is the equivalent force (acceleration) of gravity, so at 3 g's your body feels like it's three times as heavy.)
