An Ekranoplan is a vehicle resembling an aircraft, but which operates solely on the principle of the "ground effect" - the increased lift and decreased aerodynamic drag that an aircraft's wings generate when they are close to a fixed surface.   The Russian-built "KM" from the 1960s is over 330 ft (100 meters) long, weighs 540 tons (fully loaded) and travels at a speed of over 250 mph (400 km/h).
